Pathways of the Pharaohs              Viking   Nov. 2017

Cairo, Egypt

This morning we take an excursion to the necropolis at Sakkara to see the world’s oldest step pyramid. After a typical Egyptian lunch,
continue to the Giza Plateau to behold the only Wonder of the Ancient World still standing: the Great Pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and
Menkaure. There, you can experience them as the ancients did—from astride the “ships of the desert”—during a brief camel ride. Nearby,
see the Great Sphinx, forever facing due east. Return to your hotel for dinner and a free evening to relax or explore on your own. (B, L, D)

Saqqara Step Pyramid
Duration: 4 hours
Egypt’s First Pyramid
Visit one of the largest burial grounds in Egypt, stepping back to the 27th century BC. You will journey with your guide to the necropolis of Saqqara,
believed to be the first pyramid built in ancient Egypt. When King Djoser enlisted architect Imhotep to construct his tomb, he demanded that it be
visible from miles away; so, for the first time, the traditional flat tomb was transformed into a pyramid. You will enter the complex via a narrow portal,
part of a great wall that once surrounded the necropolis. Admire the enduring construction of the Step Pyramid, then step inside one of the tombs,
some of which are decorated with the finest paintings from the Old Kingdom period. Later, you will stop at a local carpet school. Here, you can meet
the women who work the looms and observe how one of Egypt’s most beautiful products is made.

Giza Pyramids & Sphinx
Duration: 3 hours
The Mystery and Magic of Antiquity
Witness one of the most iconic landmarks in the world on the Giza Plateau. You will meet your guide for a drive to this breathtaking site on the edge of
Cairo. There are many tombs here, but the most spectacular are the three iconic Great Pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the last of the
Seven Wonders of the Ancient World remaining. Standing before this trio of massive structures, you will hear about their fascinating history from your
guide. Then, proceed to view the famous Abu al-Hol, the Sphinx, erected here to guard the tombs and ward off tomb raiders and enemies of the
pharaohs. Legends tell of its great wisdom and power. You will also have an opportunity for a brief camel ride and photograph upon your “ship of the
desert.”
