Aswan, Egypt
After breakfast, visit the small, elegant Philae sanctuary, dedicated to Isis, rescued from the rising waters. This temple is one of the
Nubian monuments that comprise a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tour the Nubian Museum to view treasures salvaged from temples
and monuments flooded by the Aswan Dam; the museum’s gardens are beautifully landscaped with terraced waterfalls. You’ll also see the
Aswan High Dam, completed in the 1960s. Enjoy lunch on board. This afternoon, take a scenic ride on a felucca, a traditional Egyptian
wooden sailboat, on the Nile. Enjoy an onboard dinner and spend the night in Aswan. (B, L, D)

Philae Temple & the Nubian Museum

Treasures Saved from Submersion
See cultural treasures large and small, all rescued from the rising waters of Lake Nasser after construction of the Aswan High Dam. You will begin with
a short drive to the Temples of Philae on Agilkia Island, only accessible by motorboat from a pier near the site. Upon arrival, enjoy a tour of the temple
dedicated to Isis, an important place of pilgrimage for centuries. As the waters of Lake Nasser rose, the temple was disassembled and relocated here.
The UNESCO-led project took nine years to finish. After your return to the mainland, continue to the Nubian Museum, a well-organized repository of
culture and history chronicling the daily life of Nubia. Baskets and pottery are on display, and you can explore a Nubian house and a reconstructed
cave lined with rock carvings. Later, stop at the Papyrus Institute to learn how the delicate paper from its namesake plant is created.

Felucca Ride on the Nile

Skim Nile Waters as Egyptians Have for Centuries
Cruise the Nile in a felucca, the traditional wooden vessel with a distinctly rigged sail that has been used by Egyptians for centuries. You will meet your
felucca and skilled pilot right alongside our berth. As you get underway, you’ll be sailing in the wake of merchants of old who navigated their crafts up
and down the river laden with goods. You will pass Elephantine Island, named for the granite boulders resembling bathing elephants on the island’s
southern end. You will also drift by Kitchener’s Island. This lush patch of land, a garden full of exotic plants from all over the world, was a gift to the
eponymous British General in thanks for his military service in the 1890s. On a hillside opposite Aswan, admire the impressive Mausoleum of Aga
Khan, spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims. You’ll find there’s no more romantic way to experience the fabled waters up close.
