An Astounding Temple and the Dam It Was Saved From
Visit two dramatic structures along the northern shores of Lake Nasser: an astonishing rescued temple and the high dam that created the lake. A short motorboat
ride takes you to the expansive Temple of Kalabsha, the largest freestanding Nubian temple. Dedicated to Isis and the androgynous Nubian solar and fertility deity,
Madulis, its construction began in 23 AD under Roman Emperor Augustus. Much later, it was moved here from its original location 30 miles away as the lake’s
waters rose. Its solid pylon entry and long temple wall strike a dramatic pose on Nasser’s shores. Explore with your guide, then return by motorboat to visit the
Aswan High Dam, completed in the 1960s. Its completion dammed the Nile to establish the 300-mile-long Lake Nasser. The lake provides irrigation, water and
electricity for all of Egypt and has regulated the seasonal flooding of the Nile, thus ending the regular summer floods.
